The plaudits have been flooding in for
Enugu Rangers who broke the jinx which cursed their campaign in the
domestic league since 1984 to win the title on home ground for the first
time in 32 years on Sunday.
A hat-trick from Chisom Egbuchulam and
another strike by Osas Okoro helped Rangers defeat El-Kanemi Warriors
4-0 to lift the Premier League trophy for the seventh time at the
Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium in Enugu.
The development sent the fans into rapturous celebrations at the stadium – and other places in the city.
Former Rangers stars Christian Chukwu
and Okey Emordi, who expressed their delight at their old club’s
league cup win, hailed the players and coach Imama Amapakabo for making
the Flying Antelopes’ fans happy again.
Former Super Eagles coach Chukwu, who
is the Technical Director of the side, urged Enugu State Governor
Ifeanyi Ugwuayi to reward the team.
He said, “We need a good example for
others. It will be great If the government can have something like
“Rangers Avenue” somewhere in Enugu and then the entire team should be
well compensated. Those who have done well in the past should also be
remembered with a Hall of Fame exclusively for Rangers.”
Emordi, who like Chukwu managed Rangers
in the past, said, “I am very happy the team have won the trophy that
eluded us for more than 32 years, it is a big celebration.”
On their part, Rivers State Commissioner for Sport Boma Iyaye and FC IfeanyiUbah President Ifeanyi Ubah told the News Agency of Nigeria that the Enugu outfit deserved to win the title.
“Congratulations to Rangers on a
thoroughly deserved title, your triumph is a product of hunger and
determination, well done,” Ubah said.
He expressed his satisfaction with the
quality of the league under the League Management Company and extended
kind words to all the teams which played in the league.
Iyaye believes Rangers and River
Unted, who will both represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League next
year, will not disappoint.
He said, “I want to congratulate Enugu Rangers for emerging champions of the NPFL for the first time in 32 years.
“Rivers United has also done well this season considering how the club started the season.”
